Hi! We’re Roger and Trevor Crosta, a father & son team of glassblowers specializing in the art of Scavo. Scavo is Italian for unearthed, and the rough, textured hand-blown Scavo Glass that comes out of our studio looks like it’s been dug up after hundreds of years.

We’ve made a commitment to producing only Scavo Glass, and outside of a factory or two in Italy that still offer a few small Scavo collections, we are the only private glass art studio devoted exclusively to the process.

This website and blog are all about our Cremation Memorial fishing floats. Glass Fishing Floats have fascinated me since I was a kid roaming the beaches of the Pacific Northwest. As fate would have it, I ended up with as a glassblower with a studio located next to Manzanita Beach on the Oregon Coast, a beach where I jog, so I have a nice collection of old Japanese floats I’ve found that washed up after stormy weather. It was natural for me to begin making glass floats once I became a glassblower, and the Scavo process turned out to be the perfect way to make them look like they’ve been floating in the ocean for years.

This obscure Venetian technique involves sifting a carefully formulated mix of organic compounds on an unformed glass piece, then blowing and shaping it without tools until the desired form is achieved–you can’t use tools to shape the glass once the Scavo has been applied because it ruins the effect. In addition to our floats, we’ve been making many other styles of Scavo Glass pieces in our studio for the last fourteen years, including Architectural Lighting Fixtures and Ikebana Vessels. But we love making the floats more than anything.

When I started making glass floats with cremation ash for family & friends, I developed a new way of using the technique I call Scavo Infusion. It’s a unique process that embeds cremation ashes into the surface of the glass with a combination of high heat and a special Scavo recipe I formulated. Trevor and I are now offering the Memorial Floats on here for anyone who is interested, and we appreciate your taking the time to look at our blog and our website!

Cheers, Roger & Trevor Crosta
